More than 10% of the students who graduate from the Faculty of Economics continue their studies in graduate school. At the Graduate School of Economics and Management from Tohoku University, students can acquire skills and specialized knowledge in the Department of Economics and Management and the Accounting School (Department of Accountancy). Economics and Management offer an advanced comprehensive education in Economics and Business Administration. Tohoku University nurture researchers who contribute to solving the social and economic problems of the 21st century and talented individuals who would become social leaders with advanced and specialized professional skills such as certified public accountants. Also, students are educated as forward-looking members of society who can respond to the needs of modern times.
🏫 About the University
In 1911, Vice Minister of Education Masataro Sawayanagi, moved to Sendai to become Tohoku University’s first president. Sawayanagi firmly believed that academic research should be integrated with education. He also believed that a university should not discriminate based on class or gender. Following this principle, Tohoku University accepted graduates from technical and higher normal schools, and despite opposition from the government at that time, became Japan’s first university to admit female students in 1913. As of 2022, there are more than 1,700 international students at the university representing 90 different countries and regions. In total there are around 10,000 undergraduates, 4,000 master’s students and 2,600 doctoral students enrolled.
