The study enables the acquisition of deeper knowledge in the fields of zoology, ecology and evolutionary biology, with the overlap of knowledge into related biological disciplines. The focus on particular disciplines and research topics is given by the staffing of the training department and the research focus of potential supervisors. These are mainly the following topics: molecular phylogeny, taxonomy and biogeography; evolution of mimetic complexes and aposematism; evolution of reproductive strategies and life history; evolution of species diversity and interspecies interactions; demography and life cycles; phenology; ecophysiology. The range of methods used allows the study of all levels of the biological hierarchy: from molecular genetic methods to spatial modeling of macroecological patterns, from field biomonitoring to phylogenetic comparative methods and meta-analysis.
