PhD in Architecture Program

The Architecture Program at Hiroshima University is a doctoral course conducted in English, spanning three years with admission in April or October. Hiroshima University is one of the largest and most comprehensive universities in Japan, made up of twelve schools and four graduate schools together with a university hospital and affiliated research institutes, and has been recognized through national initiatives supporting internationally oriented higher education. Within this doctoral track, the Architecture Program trains candidates to conduct independent research on subjects such as building design, urban planning, structural systems, and the history and theory of architecture. Doctoral study in architecture typically blends design research, technical analysis, and scholarly writing, with candidates developing a dissertation under the direction of a faculty advisor that addresses an original architectural or urban research question. Depending on their specialization, students may examine topics ranging from sustainable building technology and structural engineering to urban design and architectural history, and graduates often continue into academic positions, research institutes, or specialized roles within architecture and urban planning practices. English-medium instruction allows the program to draw international doctoral applicants who already hold training in architecture or a related design or engineering field. With two intakes each year, in April and October, applicants have flexibility in scheduling their enrollment around prior academic commitments or visa arrangements.
