About the Program

Biomedical Science and Engineering is also offered as a master's degree at Hokkaido University with an October admission point, taught in English over a two-year course of study. Hokkaido University was established in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural College and was the first higher education institution in Japan to award a bachelor's degree; today it comprises 12 undergraduate schools and 21 graduate schools covering nearly all areas of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. This program applies engineering principles to problems in biology and medicine, an interdisciplinary field covering areas such as medical devices, biomaterials, tissue engineering, medical imaging, and biomechanics, along with the design of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Students in a biomedical science and engineering program typically build a foundation in engineering subjects such as mechanics, electronics, and materials science, and combine that with biological and medical coursework, preparing them to develop and assess technologies intended for clinical and research applications. Given the field's collaborative nature, students commonly work alongside researchers from both engineering and medical disciplines during their laboratory-based research. Hokkaido University's wide range of graduate schools, spanning nearly every major academic area, offers biomedical engineering students access to related expertise in fields such as materials science, robotics, and clinical medicine. Graduates of this program generally move into roles at medical device companies, biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms, hospitals and clinical research centers, or pursue further doctoral study, applying their combined engineering and biomedical training to ongoing challenges in healthcare technology.
