The B.A. in Deaf Studies program centers on Deaf culture, language, and identity with a focus on social justice and equity. Students engage in critical analysis of oppression, accessibility, and rights through coursework and research. The curriculum emphasizes intercultural communication and real-world advocacy. A year-long senior thesis requires original research and public presentation.

Focus areas include Deaf culture, Deaf narratives, Black Deaf People's Studies, Deaf Women's Studies, Disability Studies, Sign Language Rights.

The program requires 120 credits distributed across core curriculum, pre-major courses, major and related courses, and free electives. Students complete a year-long senior thesis and an internship in a Deaf community setting.

Graduates enter roles such as media producer, ASL specialist, community advocate, accessibility consultant, researcher, educator, or cultural liaison.

About Gallaudet University

American Sign Language, Deaf studies, and accessibility are central to Gallaudet’s academic identity. Chartered in 1864, the private university is designed for deaf and hard of hearing students and offers programs across five schools. Areas of study include ASL, interpretation, linguistics, education, international development, business, social work, public affairs, psychology, biology, chemistry, information technology, mathematics, public health, data science, and accessible human-centered computing and policy. International admissions staff provide support, while application requirements include English and ASL essays, academic records, financial documentation, and testing that varies by applicant and program. New and emerging signers can use JumpStart, an immersion program for learning ASL and exploring Deaf culture. Financial aid, scholarships, and student employment are available, and nine in ten students receive financial support.
