Justus Liebig University Giessen

Bachelor in Global Food Systems

Gießen, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Global Food Systems is a six-semester bachelor's programme at Justus Liebig University Giessen that provides interdisciplinary training at the intersection of nutrition, agriculture, the environment, and international development cooperation. Students build a foundation in natural, social, and economic sciences, acquiring practical skills in data collection, system modelling, research, and evaluation. The first four semesters are structured around 20 mandatory core modules covering topics such as chemistry, biology, land use systems, soil sciences, ecology and biodiversity, food policy, climate science, international food and nutrition security, agroecology, and sustainable production. In the fifth semester, students choose five optional profile modules from a range of specialisation areas to shape their individual competence profile; two of these can be replaced by a work placement. The sixth and final semester features the Future Lab study project, in which students independently plan and carry out a project, alongside the bachelor's thesis and an accompanying thesis module. Two mandatory German language modules are integrated into the programme, and further German modules can be added as profile modules. The programme qualifies graduates for roles in the agricultural and food industry, sustainability and quality management, project management and consulting, and international organisations and NGOs. It is offered at Justus Liebig University Giessen in Gießen, Germany.
