The Master's in European Legal Perspectives at University of Cologne is a program for international students taught in English.

đź“– Introduction

The University of Cologne is a university in Cologne, Germany. It was established in the year 1388 and is one of the most prestigious and research intensive universities in Germany. It was the sixth university to be established in Central Europe. It closed in 1798 before being re-established in 1919. The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Europe. Due to its outstanding scientific achievements and the high quality and diversity of its degree programmes, it enjoys an excellent international reputation. Whereas many universities owe their founding to important religious figures or secular regents, the University of Cologne was founded by citizens of the city. That explains why the University of Cologne is still regarded as a city university: not only was it founded by the citizens of Cologne, but its campus is located right in the city center.

📚 About the Program

"""The LL.M. programme prepares for top-ranking employment in the legal field in the European Union or indeed globally.Course descriptionThe European Union (EU) continues to evolve. In past years, its role has already evolved from a simple trade union to a political entity alongside the member states. National law in EU member states becomes more and more intertwined with European law, as EU legislation continues to harmonise and standardise various fields of the law, all while overseen by the European Court of Justice. In order to master this important position in the future, educated and specifically trained lawyers are required. This is where the new LL.M. programme comes in: it prepares you for top-ranking employment in the legal field in the European Union or indeed globally.ContentsGlobal challenges such as financial crises, climate change or the increasing digitalization of all areas of life underline the continued importance of the European Union (EU) as a prime example of international and supranational cooperation. For internationally active lawyers, in-depth knowledge of the EU and its law is just as essential for their daily work as the ability to operate confidently in an international professional environment. The postgraduate master's programme European Legal Perspectives (ELP) therefore aims to impart professionally oriented legal expertise in the field of European Union law and, at the same time, to promote intercultural and linguistic competencies. This is first reflected in the professional structure of the programme through interdisciplinarity, the division into basic and specialized knowledge (general and special perspective), as well as a close connection between theory and practice (the perspectives of legal science and legal practice). The master's programme is therefore ultimately intended to remedy an urgent need on the part of German and foreign students: the ability to study, in particular, certain special areas of German and European law, guided thereby by the expertise of the Faculty of Law at the University of Cologne. At the same time, the programme is a response to high demand coming from the legal profession and numerous companies for lawyers who are highly qualified in European law. The master's programme is thus intended to combine both sides and offer students from all over the world an opportunity for comprehensive additional training in European law, while at the same time attracting them to the German and European job markets. StructureThe master's programne is organized in modules and extends over two semesters. On account of the programme’s purpose in augmenting professional development, all modules are tailored to the specific needs and skills of the students, particularly as it relates to their professional experience. All modules have been established exclusively for the master's programme in order to ensure that the continuing education offered is goal-oriented. Courses in modules are usually practice-oriented lectures and seminars; these can also be held as block courses. The internship and the master's thesis each represent independent modules. During the first semester, students complete three basic modules and one additional module on legal methods and scientific work. During the lecture-free period after the first semester, a practical phase takes place in the form of an internship or a Case Study. For the second semester, students choose one of four specializations and complete a total of four focus modules. Three of the four focus modules must be from the same specialization area (core area). An additional focus module may be from either the selected specialization area or from another specialization area (elective area). Students are free to participate in additional courses and modules.Required Documents:●School leaving certificate/proof of having passed a university entrance exam●Degree certificate (if already available), if not, please upload a preliminary degree overview●Overview of subjects and grades (transcript of records)●University grading system●An officially certified translation if the original documents were not issued in German or English Language●Applicants from China and Vietnam are required to also submit a current APS certificate. (for India: As of the winter semester 2023/24)●English Language Certificate: Level B2/C1 (TOEFL Internet-based 93; IELTS average 6,5 - each single component 6,0; Cambridge qualifications 175; TOEIC 460-425-175; Abitur incl. 6 years)"""

🏫 About the University

On the occasion of its 600th anniversary in 1988, the university published an extensive history of the University of Cologne in three volumes, which appeared with Böhlau. Erich Meuthen wrote the first volume, and in a short overview he first described the history of the old university (1388–1798), celebrating the height of its prosperity in the 15th century. More than a century after the French government closed the old Universitas coloniensis in 1798, a long-cherished dream of the people of Cologne came true: in 1919 a new university was built. In 2019 the university celebrated its 100th anniversary.

The UoC’s mission is to create, preserve and impart knowledge, to offer its students and early-career academics outstanding academic education, to qualify them for both academic and professional  careers, to promote cutting-edge research and to drive innovation while focusing on the constantly changing needs and challenges of today’s society.

The University of Cologne’s six Faculties are the institutional framework for its research activities. The Faculties offer more than a hundred degree programmes and support 16 cross-Faculty research and teaching centres. Moreover, the UoC has several large, internationally competitive research areas: mechanisms of aging-associated diseases; behavioral economic engineering and social cognition, quantum matter and materials, socio-economic, cultural and political transformations in the global south, plant sciences and skills and structures in language and cognition.
