Bielefeld University

Master in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics

Bielefeld, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Master's in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics at Bielefeld University is an interdisciplinary programme jointly operated by the faculties of physics and mathematics, each responsible for approximately half of the teaching. It brings together research areas including condensed matter theory, cosmology, dynamical systems, elementary particle physics, mathematical physics, numerics, probability theory, stochastic analysis, and harmonic analysis. Students can combine several of these areas within their course of study. The programme runs over 4 semesters. During the first year, parallel courses in theoretical physics, mathematics, and mathematical physics are offered. In the second year, students specialise in one of these three fields and write their Master's thesis, which is supervised jointly by two faculty members, one from each faculty. An international English-speaking track allows non-German-speaking students to complete all coursework in English. Both faculties are part of the Bielefeld Graduate School in Theoretical Sciences. The programme accepts students in both winter and summer semesters and is based at Bielefeld University in Bielefeld, Germany.
