American Sign Language, Deaf studies, and accessibility are central to Gallaudet’s academic identity. Chartered in 1864, the private university is designed for deaf and hard of hearing students and offers programs across five schools. Areas of study include ASL, interpretation, linguistics, education, international development, business, social work, public affairs, psychology, biology, chemistry, information technology, mathematics, public health, data science, and accessible human-centered computing and policy. Research projects address real-world challenges and global issues. The campus, known as Kendall Green, covers 99 acres in Washington, DC. Students can take part in residential and commuter life, student clubs and organizations, NCAA varsity athletics, research, and other curricular and co-curricular activities. Washington provides access to historical landmarks, museums, neighborhoods, international cultural organizations, nonprofits, corporations, internships, and employment opportunities. Campus buildings and interpreting services are designed around accessibility. International students join a community that includes deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing students from 40 countries. International admissions staff provide support, while application requirements include English and ASL essays, academic records, financial documentation, and testing that varies by applicant and program. New and emerging signers can use JumpStart, an immersion program for learning ASL and exploring Deaf culture. Financial aid, scholarships, and student employment are available, and nine in ten students receive financial support.
