Knight-Hennessy Scholars funds up to 3 years of graduate study at Stanford. Full tuition, living stipend, travel & enrichment funding. 100 scholars yearly.

Overview

Knight-Hennessy Scholars is the largest fully endowed scholars programme in the world, created in 2016 with a $750 million gift to Stanford University by Phil Knight and John Hennessy. The programme funds up to three years of graduate study at Stanford across any of the university's seven schools: the Graduate School of Business, School of Medicine, School of Law, School of Engineering, School of Education, School of Humanities and Sciences, and School of Sustainability. About 100 scholars are selected each year from a global applicant pool.

The programme looks for students who demonstrate independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset. Unlike many scholarships restricted to a single discipline, Knight-Hennessy covers the full range of Stanford's graduate programmes: PhD, MBA, MD, JD, MFA, MA, MS, MPP, and joint degrees.

Scholars receive full funding for tuition and associated fees, a living and academic expenses stipend, and a travel grant. The King Global Leadership Program gives scholars hands-on experiences in leadership, community engagement, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The cohort model means scholars from different disciplines and backgrounds learn alongside one another throughout their time at Stanford.

How to Apply

  1. Confirm Eligibility and Choose a Stanford Programme: Verify that you earned your bachelor's degree within the eligibility window (January 2019 or later for the 2026 cohort). Identify a full-time Stanford graduate programme and confirm you meet its admission requirements.
  2. Submit the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Application: Complete the KHS-specific application through the Knight-Hennessy online portal. This includes two short essays, a one-minute introductory video, a resume/CV, and two letters of recommendation. The KHS application is separate from the Stanford degree programme application.
  3. Submit the Stanford Degree Programme Application: Apply to your chosen Stanford graduate programme through its standard admissions process. Submit this by the earlier of the programme's KHS-specific deadline or December 2, 2025. Both applications must be complete for KHS consideration.
  4. Complete the Immersion Experience (if shortlisted): Semifinalists are invited to Stanford for a multi-day immersive experience, held in February or March. This includes group activities, individual interviews, and community engagement. The immersion replaces a traditional interview and evaluates fit with the scholar community.
  5. Receive Decision and Accept the Offer: Final decisions go out in March or April. Selected scholars accept the Knight-Hennessy offer and confirm their Stanford degree programme enrollment. Scholars begin the King Global Leadership Program before the start of their first academic quarter.

Tips for a Strong Application

Personal Statement Tips

  • The KHS essays are short, so every sentence must count. Focus on independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset rather than recounting your resume
  • The one-minute video is not a performance. Be authentic, warm, and direct. Selection committees use it to gauge personality and communication style, not production quality
  • Show how interdisciplinary engagement at Stanford would amplify your impact. KHS values scholars who will learn from peers in other fields
  • Name a specific problem you want to work on and explain why Stanford is the place to make progress on it

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying to KHS without submitting the Stanford degree programme application by the KHS-specific deadline. Both must be complete or your KHS application is disqualified
  • Treating the KHS essays as a rehash of the degree programme essays. KHS looks for a distinct lens on leadership and purpose, not academic research plans
  • Neglecting immersion preparation. Semifinalists who treat it as a passive experience rather than active engagement with the community are less successful
