Schwarzman Scholars funds a 1-year Master's in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University. Full tuition, room & board, travel, and stipend. 150 scholars yearly.

Overview

Schwarzman Scholars is a fully funded one-year Master's programme in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Founded by Stephen A. Schwarzman in 2016, the programme prepares future global leaders through an immersive academic and cultural experience at one of China's top universities. About 150 scholars are selected each year from tens of thousands of applicants, putting the acceptance rate at 3-4%.

The programme builds a global community of emerging leaders who will deepen understanding between China and the rest of the world. Scholars study one of three concentrations: Public Policy, Economics and Business, or International Studies. All instruction is in English. The curriculum pairs academics with leadership training, cultural immersion, and professional development through high-profile speakers, mentors, and study tours across China.

The scholarship pays for everything: tuition, room and board, round-trip airfare, in-country study tours, textbooks and supplies, a personal stipend, health insurance, and a laptop and smartphone. Scholars live together in the purpose-built Schwarzman College at Tsinghua, creating an intensive residential experience modeled on cohort-based programmes like the Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships.

Tips for a Strong Application

Personal Statement Tips

  • Show a genuine interest in China and global affairs. The selection committee wants applicants who can explain why understanding China matters for their career and for the world.
  • Be specific about your leadership experience and its impact rather than listing titles you have held
  • Describe how you would contribute to the cohort's intellectual diversity and community life at Schwarzman College

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying without a clear reason for wanting to study in China. Generic interest in 'international experience' will not be enough.
  • Overlooking the video component or treating it as an afterthought. It is a real part of the evaluation.
  • Submitting recommendation letters from high-profile people who barely know you, instead of strong letters from people who can speak to your character and leadership in detail
