Courses & curriculum
Biomedical Sciences is a 3-year bachelor's programme. You start out by following mandatory courses, followed by several electives and a minor. You conclude the programme by writing a thesis.
Year 1
The first two semesters form the foundation of the programme. You learn about genetics, cells and tissues, the physiology of organs and organisms and their development.
Of course, you'll also lear about the basic principles of research methods and statistics, which will help you to interpret and assess the value of research results also when conducting your own experiements.
Year 2
In the third semester we address the immune system, postnatal development and ageing, but also modern imaging techniques.
You will learn step-by-step how biological processes function in the body; from the smallest components (cells and molecules) to the most complex organs and, ultimately, the human body as a whole. You’ll be familiarised with the entire field of biomedical sciences and the various perspectives associated with it, you'll discover where your interests lie, and you'll learn which knowledge you need to solve different problems.
At the end of the third semsester, you can begin to tailor your degree programme to your own requirements. As of the fourth semester, you can place particular emphasis on cetrain aspects by selecting courses that fit your interests and ambitions. From then on, you will study the latest knowledge relating to health and sickness in greater detail. You will also immerse yourself in the mechanisms underlying the prevention and treatment of various conditions.
Year 3
In the third year, you'll choose your minor for further in-depth study, depending on your interests and possibly your requirements for a future's master's programme. This period is dedicated to the development of your personal profile.
For your minor, you can choose from subjects offered at UM or at a different university (either in the Netherlands or abroad).
The Biomedical Sciences programme at UM offers various modules that you can combine into your own minor package (options see below under ‘Minor’)
You may also decide to further prepare yourself for your future field of work by choosing a minor in entrepreneurship, or follow an educative minor to develop your teaching skills, for example.
Finally, you will conduct your own research project, supervised by a professional researcher, which will result in the writing of your bachelor’s thesis.
