Course detail & modules
This course adopts the “learning by doing” approach as its main teaching philosophy. The primary vehicle for this approach is learning through project work, which emphasises collaborative learning through problem-based workshops.
With opportunities to collaborate with fellow students from other courses in these industry-collaborated projects, you will gain invaluable industry experience, build up your analytical thinking, problem solving and practical skills, and make meaningful industry connections. The briefs for these live projects are prepared jointly by academic staff and industry specialists to satisfy both academic and professional learning outcomes.
Assessment is 100% by coursework. Depending on the module, your assessment can be one or more of the following:
team and individual project work (digital and face-to-face)
business/marketing reports and presentations (digital and face-to-face)
web-based exercises and online tasks
blogs and Learning logs
portfolio of work (digital and print)
visual essays
peer assessment and self-evaluation
major graduation project
You will work on your creative media and digital skills, and develop your eye for current and future fashion trends. You will learn to use a range of industry-standard software such as Adobe, InDesign and Photoshop; so that you can develop your creative ideas to communicate with and influence consumers. You will use these digital skills to put together a portfolio to use as a showcase for future clients or employers. Throughout your time at UWL, you will have access to professional facilities:
our PC/Mac labs
digital print bureau
photography studio
printmaking studio
on-site library stocked with fashion databases, books, e-books and journals.
This course includes an optional nine-week work experience placement in your second year. You can take your internship digitally or abroad. An internship will enhance your employability by offering valuable experience and professional contacts within the industry and put your marketing skills to use in the real world of fashion.
We regularly invite key industry professionals to deliver guest lectures to enhance your employability prospects. You will visit fashion brand headquarters, museums and galleries, international showrooms, and trend agencies; you will attend fashion fairs and exhibitions both in London and in other global fashion capitals. Fashion Business cohort each year organises optional field study trips to major fashion cities such as Milan, Rome, Florence, Paris, Antwerp, Amsterdam, New York, Dubai, Tokyo and Shanghai.
During your final year, you will need to realise your Major graduation project. This course allows you to choose your final year project and tailor it to your career aspirations. It uniquely offers four options, which is the first of its kind in the UK:
entrepreneurial idea (start-up)
problem-based business project
written dissertation
visual dissertation (still or moving image or composition).
In your final year, you will exhibit your work as part of the UWL ArtFest. This event includes all final-year students studying across art and design degrees at UWL and is an excellent platform for you to showcase your work to members of the creative industries.
Selected students will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work to the industry at Graduate Fashion Week in London or enter high-profile competitions with major brands, professional bodies and industry leaders.
