📖Program Curriculum

Course information
The Master’s Programme in Performing Arts as Critical Practice comprises 120 credits. The first year has a total scope of 60 credits and it consists of in-depth courses and workshops, teacher-led and peer-to-peer seminars and practice sessions, as well as fieldwork. The second year also has a total scope of 60 credits, and is dedicated to the preparation of and carrying out of the Exam project, Master’s Thesis and Portfolio. The final semester includes an independent artistic work, the Exam project, developed in collaboration with one or more partners, comprising 15 credits, an extract or representation of the Exam project which is presented for 5 credits and a Master’s thesis and Portfolio comprising 10 credits.

First year:
In the first year of the Master’s the focus is on situating and exploring the student’s own artistic practice and interests through peer-to-peer sharing of practice and working methods. The student is introduced to collaborative methods and feedback tools. A key focus is that of situated knowledge and practice. Next to the practical work, the emergent curriculum comprises a range of theoretical frameworks and ethical reflections, as well as writing, fieldwork, and an introduction to (artistic) research methods and processes. The study trajectory is shaped by the specific research questions and needs of the students which is followed by an individual supervisor based at the institution.

Second year:
The second year of the programme is dedicated to the detailed preparation, execution, documentation and reflection of a practical artistic work, the ‘Exam project’. In the third semester the focus is on the concept development, the overall process design and the preparations for the collaborations with the partner(s) for the Exam project. Furthermore, there will be a focus on curatorial strategies as preparation for the open event in semester 4. The reflection and writing trajectory of this semester facilitates the writing of the outline and rudimentary draft of the Master’s thesis, and includes ethical and critical reflection. During the fourth semester, the student will create an artistic work in alliance with agents and/or institutions outside the academy. The student will also write a reflective Master's thesis and present a digital portfolio that can offer an overview of their work and process. Further, the student will collaborate on a curated presentation of the Exam projects in form of an open event.
