About the Program

The Master's programme in Ecology and Environmental Change at Bielefeld University is a four-semester programme that brings together animal and plant ecology, behavioural ecology, chemical ecology, conservation ecology, and theoretical evolutionary ecology. The focus is on how individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems respond and adapt to environmental change, with challenges such as climate change, land use, and pollution as recurring themes. The programme begins in the winter semester. In the first year, students take modules including the Wadden Sea ecosystem with field excursion, environmental change and chemical communication, models in conservation biology, animal ecology in a changing world, effects of environmental change on plant chemistry, plant ecology in a changing environment, and nature conservation and environmental protection with excursion. The second year consists of individual research modules and the Master's thesis. Students develop laboratory and field experiment skills, chemical-analytical methods, eco-evolutionary modelling, and statistical and scientific communication abilities. All classes are taught in English. Free German language courses are available for students. The programme is based at Bielefeld University in Bielefeld, Germany.
