About the Program

The Master of Ecology at the University of Bremen is a four-semester research-oriented programme designed for students with a background in biology, ecology, or a related subject. The programme covers a wide range of ecological subdisciplines including plant and fungal ecology, evolutionary ecology, soil ecology, population ecology, molecular ecology, and environmental risk assessment. The first semester covers core ecological concepts, experimental design and data analysis, scientific writing, molecular ecology, and an introduction to current topics in ecology. Population Ecology is compulsory in the second semester. From the second and third semesters, students choose specialisation courses in areas such as behavioural ecology, soil and ecosystem ecology, vegetation ecology and conservation biology, ecophysiology, or marine ecology. The programme includes a one-on-one mentoring element, field excursions, a research project, and the writing of grant proposals. In the third semester, students may study at a partner university abroad. The Master's thesis is completed in the fourth semester, either at Bremen or at a partner institution. Instruction combines lectures, seminars, practical training, field excursions, and assisted self-tutoring. The programme is based at the University of Bremen in Bremen, Germany.
