Future Generations University

Future Generations University focuses its academic offering on community-based change. Its main degree is the Master of Arts in Applied Community Development, supported by certificates and residential field courses for continuing education. The curriculum develops skills in nonprofit management, monitoring and evaluation, social research methods, fundraising and resource development, community conservation, resource mapping, and communication for social change.

The program is designed for active adults balancing work, family, and community responsibilities. Students can enroll full-time or part-time, attend weekly live online classes, and shape their pathway through independent study, internships, elective courses, residential learning, and field research. Full-time students can complete the degree in as few as 22 months, while other students can take longer. The program requires 32 credits, and learning projects take place in each student's community.

Based in Franklin, West Virginia, the university uses a hybrid, live-online format that connects students through a global classroom. International students should expect a learning model centered on flexibility, peer discussion, applied projects, and local community work rather than a conventional campus-based schedule. The university's approach suits professionals seeking leadership and project management skills they can use directly in community development careers. Residential field courses may provide additional in-person learning opportunities.
