Iḷisaġvik College grew from the North Slope Higher Education Center, created in 1986 through a partnership between the North Slope Borough and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The college was officially established by the North Slope Borough in 1996. Its original purpose was to prepare local residents for administrative, business, and political roles across the North Slope, and that focus on local capacity remains central to its work. Graduates have earned associate and bachelor’s degrees, as well as certificates and endorsements.
Academic offerings connect professional preparation with the Arctic and the region’s cultural context. Allied Health, Pre-Nursing, and Science courses prepare students for growing fields, while career and workforce training supports human resources needs across the North Slope and beyond. Every degree plan includes Iñupiaq Studies content. Students can also pursue an Associate of Arts in Iñupiaq Studies or a Certificate in Iñupiaq Language and Culture.
The college is located in Utqiaġvik, also known as Barrow, Alaska, and offers instruction both online and in person. It is Alaska’s only Tribal College and is open to all students. International students should expect a small-college setting with small class sizes, tutoring, internships, accommodations, financial aid counseling, and a loaner laptop program. The college also provides a family-oriented student support environment. Tuition waivers are available to Alaska Natives, American Indians, Elders, and North Slope Borough residents.
