Philander Smith University

Philander Smith University places academic achievement and social justice at the center of its educational mission. Students are prepared to become advocates who work to improve their communities and the wider world. Health and science programs are receiving particular attention through a $7 million federal investment intended to strengthen those areas. The university also offers CNA programs, with sessions scheduled throughout the year.

Student learning takes place in a setting designed to support close academic relationships. The university lists a 12:1 student-faculty ratio, five majors, and 10 student organizations. These figures point to a compact institution where students can engage with faculty and participate in organized campus life. Scholarships and academic-program support are also being expanded through recent philanthropic funding, including a $3.9 million Windgate Foundation grant for need-based aid and a historic $19 million gift.

Philander Smith University is approaching its 150th anniversary and recently marked its 138th commencement ceremony. Its campus is in Little Rock, Arkansas, providing an urban setting for students studying in the United States. International applicants should plan carefully around registration, advising, move-in details, and eligibility requirements. Fall 2026 enrollment is open, with classes beginning August 12. The university's mission, health and science investments, and emphasis on affordability are central parts of the student experience.
