Research and experiential learning shape the Washington College experience. Students can pursue field research, conservation internships, and the Chesapeake Semester through the Center for Environment and Society. The John S. Toll Research program supports work such as computational chemistry. The Rose O'Neill Literary House offers internships, student publications, readings, and workshops with working writers. At the Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, students take part in Explore America summer internships and Quill & Compass programming.

Washington College is in Chestertown, Maryland, with opportunities extending across the campus and nearby community. The Center for Environment and Society is located in Semans-Griswold Environmental Hall on the Waterfront Campus. The Rose O'Neill Literary House is on Washington Avenue, while the Starr Center occupies the Custom House on South Water Street. Students can combine majors and minors with programs such as education studies, pre-pharmacy, engineering dual degree, secondary teacher certification, and the Institute of Religion, Politics, and Culture.

International students can expect a setting where professors are accessible and students take part in academic, professional, and campus activities. Students from China and other locations have pursued physics, psychology, philosophy, political science, and English, alongside research fellowships, internships, tutoring, athletics, Hillel, and study abroad. Washington also offers opportunities connected to Washington, D.C., including internships at the Brookings Institution. These experiences can help students test career interests while building academic and professional experience.
