Master in Behaviour: From Neural Mechanisms to Evolution, MSc

Bielefeld, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The MSc programme "Behaviour: From Neural Mechanisms to Evolution" at Bielefeld University provides interdisciplinary training in the scientific study of behaviour, drawing on both neurophysiology and behavioural ecology. The programme approaches behaviour from two complementary directions: a computational aspect, examining how the nervous system — from cellular and network levels up to whole-system cognitive performance — produces behaviour; and an evolutionary aspect, examining how brain morphology, function, and learnt behaviours have been shaped by development and evolutionary selection. Modules may also be drawn from psychology, computer science, robotics, or linguistics. The programme runs over 4 semesters and admits 14 students per year. The first two semesters deliver foundational modules covering topics including Probing Behaviour, Neural Mechanisms of Behaviour, Control of Behaviour, Perception and Action, Evolution of Behaviour, and Function of Behaviour (10 ECTS each), with emphasis on individual tutoring and small-group work. In the second year, students carry out independent research projects in two of the participating research groups, leading to a six-month Master's thesis worth 30 ECTS. A weekly seminar series runs throughout. It is recommended that at least the supplementary module be completed in a research group outside Germany. The programme is based in the Faculty of Biology and is offered at Bielefeld University in Bielefeld, Germany.
