The institution began as Buchtel College in 1870, founded by the Ohio Universalist Convention with support from Akron industrialist John R. Buchtel and other local residents. Its community ties continued as it became a private, non-denominational school in 1907, transferred to the city of Akron in 1913, and became a state university in 1967. That history still informs its connection to regional industry and economic growth.

Akron offers more than 200 associate, bachelor's, master's, doctorate and law degree programs, with options for full-time, part-time, online, veteran and adult learners. Academic work spans the university's colleges, multidisciplinary centers and labs. Polymer and advanced materials expertise supports work in manufacturing, medical devices, technology, air filtration, advanced energy, green technologies, and microelectronic and optical devices.
