Scholarships for Nigerian students

"I graduated with a Second Class Lower. Can I still be funded abroad?"

Yes, through a short list of schemes. PTDF's Overseas Postgraduate scheme sets Second Class Upper as its default MSc bar and then accepts a 2:2 where the applicant brings industry experience. At PhD level it accepts a 2:2 first degree from anyone who already holds a postgraduate degree. The Federal Scholarship Board's Bilateral Education Agreement postgraduate track does not bend. It wants a Second Class Upper minimum and completed NYSC. DAAD gates its EPOS courses on two or more years of professional work instead of degree class, and its Helmut-Schmidt Programme asks for a bachelor's in a relevant field.

On the Nairaland thread where the question keeps coming back, one graduate wrote that every school enquired at demanded a 2:1. That is where a 2:2 usually dies, at the university offer rather than at the funder. A funded place needs an admission and an award, so fix the admission first, then chase money that fits the offer in hand.

"My CGPA is 2.98. Can I do a Master's abroad?"

PTDF and the Federal Scholarship Board both write their bar as a degree classification rather than a CGPA. Funders read the classification line on the transcript and certificate. If it reads Second Class Lower, the answer above applies. If it reads Second Class Upper, the full list is open.

"Can an HND holder apply for a Master's scholarship outside Nigeria?"

Neither PTDF's 2026 scheme notice nor the Federal Scholarship Board's BEA advert mentions HND either way. Both set their entry bar as a first-degree classification. Put the question to the scheme in writing before building an application around it. Abroad, a credential evaluation of the documents decides what the qualification counts as.

"I am in 300 level. Can I get a scholarship abroad now?"

The Federal Scholarship Board's BEA undergraduate track excludes students already mid-degree. Its 2013/14 advert told anyone who would be in "300 Level and above" at any tertiary institution by October 2013 not to apply. The track is built for school leavers, with five O'level distinctions, a certificate no more than three years old and an age limit of 23. Two or three years into a Nigerian degree, the better route is to finish it on a domestic bursary, complete NYSC and apply at postgraduate level.

Age limits that actually bite

The Federal Scholarship Board caps BEA postgraduate applicants at 35 for a Master's and 40 for a PhD. Saudi Arabia's government scholarship runs fixed bands of 17 to 25 for a bachelor's, up to 30 for a master's and up to 35 for a PhD.

NYSC

PTDF requires a discharge or exemption certificate, and the Federal Scholarship Board requires completed service for the BEA postgraduate track. Anyone still serving should plan the application year around the discharge date rather than around an award letter.

Whether an applicant also applies to the university depends on which of four shapes the scheme takes. That is the question Nigerians ask most on the PTDF threads, and getting it wrong costs a cycle.

Central government portal. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Education runs everything through the Study in Saudi portal, split into an internal track for non-Saudis already resident and an external track for applicants abroad. Even the Islamic University of Madinah routes applicants back to that portal. Korea's GKS goes through the Korean Cultural Centre in Abuja, and the Korean embassy's Lagos office states plainly that it does not accept GKS applications. The Embassy of Japan in Abuja takes MEXT applications in hardcopy only, in person or by post, with no online or email route.

National nomination. The Federal Scholarship Board (fsb@education.gov.ng) nominates Nigeria's Commonwealth Scholarship candidates and publishes its own advert on education.gov.ng. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission also caps Shared Scholarships. No more than half of any UK university's Shared Scholarship intake can come from Ghana, India, Nigeria and Pakistan combined, so Nigerian applicants compete against the other three as much as against the field.

Admission is the application. KAUST runs no separate scholarship form. Every admitted MS or PhD student gets full tuition, housing, health insurance and a stipend, regardless of nationality or religion.

Restricted list. PTDF's 2026 award funded only its partner universities in the UK, Germany, France and Malaysia, and made the UK PhD split-site, with part of the residency spent at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Kaduna.

Work the year backwards from the deadline. The transcript takes longest, so order it first. PTDF's portal will not accept a submission until NIMC has verified the applicant's NIN. The US Embassy wants a TOEFL score of 90 on file ahead of Fulbright's 1 June deadline. UK rules require the bank balance to sit unbroken for 28 days ending within 31 days of the visa application, so the money has to be in place weeks before submission.

TotalEnergies states that its scholarship application is free and that it uses no paid agents. Anyone charging a processing fee is not working for the scheme.

Academic transcript. University World News documented graduates of the University of Jos, the University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University and Rivers State University who lost fully funded offers at Cook University, Manchester, Cranfield and Nottingham because their own university could not produce a transcript before the scholarship deadline. Sign-off is manual and runs department, then faculty, then senate, over weeks to months rather than days. Fees vary by institution and are not standardised. Order the transcript the day you decide to apply.

WAEC/NECO credential evaluation. WES now authenticates and verifies Nigerian academic documents directly through the WAEC Digital Certificate Platform at portal.waec.org once it has confirmed the applicant's identity, so a lost or unreachable paper certificate no longer stops the evaluation. Foreign universities and immigration bodies want the secondary certificates evaluated. WES does not itemise the fee on its own Nigeria guidance page, so check its current fee schedule before you budget.

NYSC exemption or discharge certificate. Graduates of Nigerian institutions get the exemption certificate from their own institution. Anyone who studied abroad has to collect it in person at NYSC Headquarters in Abuja, and no university can do it for them. NYSC publishes no cost on nysc.gov.ng.

Local Government identification letter, also called a certificate of origin. PTDF lists it as a mandatory upload, and federal schemes require it. It comes from the applicant's Local Government Area or from a traditional ruler, and applicants report having to turn up in person for it. The cost varies by Local Government Area and is not published anywhere central.

National Identity Number. PTDF's portal blocks submission until NIMC has verified the NIN, and forum threads are full of applicants stuck at exactly that step. NIMC verification charges apply, and the PTDF notice does not state the amount.

Where a degree certificate or statement of result has not been issued yet, applicants ask whether a stamped student copy of the transcript can stand in. None of the scheme notices checked here answer that, so put the question to the scheme in writing and keep the reply.
