Scholarships for Egyptian students

The eligibility rules that actually decide Egyptian applications split into two groups: the funder's rules, and Egypt's own.

Egypt's rules come first for anything state-funded. Before a male citizen can be sent abroad on any state-funded Mission — PhD, joint supervision, post-doctoral mission or master's — he must show proof of completed or exempted compulsory military service. This is not a formality that can be resolved after selection. If your status is unresolved, the Mission route is closed until it is settled, regardless of academic record.

The second Egyptian rule is the sending body (الجهة الموفدة). Every application form, transcript and endorsement letter must be separately certified and stamped by the relevant academic authority — your home university or institute — before upload. The Missions rules are explicit that this certification is done independently of the application itself, which means it takes its own time and involves people who are not working to your timetable.

The foreign funders' rules are more conventional but very specific about tests. Fulbright Egypt does not accept a generic English certificate. It takes one of TOEFL ITP at 550, TOEFL iBT at 80, IELTS at 6.5, Duolingo at 105, or an Egyptian-university English Proficiency Test at 550 sat at one of a short list of named centres including AMIDEAST. A test that is not on that list, or a score from an unlisted centre, will not be accepted, and this catches applicants who prepared for a different exam.

Several schemes are open to Egyptians without restriction beyond the usual academic bar. Erasmus Mundus has no nationality limit at all, and Egypt has a National Erasmus+ Office at erasmus.edu.eg that acts as the local point of contact. The Aga Khan Foundation's International Scholarship Programme lists Egypt among its designated priority countries. DAAD, MEXT and the Chinese Government Scholarship are all open to Egyptian applicants — the Chinese Embassy in Egypt's own materials confirm Egyptian eligibility.

On the recurring question of whether an Egyptian medical student can be funded in Europe: the routes exist but they are postgraduate and research-shaped rather than clinical. DAAD's Egypt-facing calls, Erasmus Mundus consortia and the Missions system's joint-supervision track are where medical and scientific applicants realistically find money. Funded clinical training abroad is a different and much narrower thing than a funded research degree.

For the students asking about a fully funded high school abroad: that is not what any scheme on this page does. Every named programme here funds university-level study or above.

Three routes, and they run on different clocks.

The Missions system. Egypt's state External Missions Programme collects candidates for PhD, joint supervision, post-doctoral and master's study abroad, and it includes a JICA co-funded sub-track, the Egyptian-Japanese Education Partnership. The published calendar is thin — the last round with concrete public dates was the 2021/2022 unified announcement, which ran from 12 February to 11 April 2022 as part of the 2017-2022 five-year plan. Because the calendar is not reliably published in advance, the practical approach is to have the sending-body certifications and the military-service certificate ready in advance, so that a call can be answered inside its window.

Direct application to a foreign funder. Chevening runs a dedicated Egypt country page and takes applications on its own portal, closing at 11:00 UTC on 6 October 2026 for 2027-2028. Fulbright runs through the binational commission in Cairo, which has operated since 1949 and publishes its own process table for each cycle. Erasmus Mundus is applied for at each consortium directly, with most windows falling between October and January.

Embassy tracks. The Embassy of Japan in Cairo runs five separate MEXT tracks, including Research Students, Undergraduate and College of Technology, each with its own schedule — this is one of the widest MEXT offerings anywhere and reaches undergraduate level, which most schemes here do not. The Korean Embassy in Egypt runs an active Global Korea Scholarship Graduate Program embassy track, with the 2026 cycle announced through the embassy. DAAD's Cairo regional office, which also covers Sudan, publishes Egypt-facing calls in its own scholarship database with concrete dates.

Whichever route applies, the order of work is the same. Resolve military service if it applies to you. Get the sending body's stamps if you are going through a Mission. Book the right English test — the specific one your funder names, not a general certificate. Only then worry about the essays.

Two of Egypt's document requirements are unusual, and both are Egyptian rather than foreign.

Military service certificate for male applicants. Egypt requires proof of completed or exempted compulsory military service before a male citizen can be sent abroad on any state-funded Mission, whether that is a PhD, a joint supervision arrangement, a post-doctoral mission or a master's. There is no route around it for the state schemes, and its timing is outside your control, so it should be the first thing you resolve rather than the last.

Sending-body certification. The Missions system requires every form, transcript and endorsement letter to be separately certified and stamped by the relevant academic authority before it is uploaded. The rules are explicit that this is an independent step. In practice it means routing paperwork through your home institution's administration on their schedule, which is why applicants who start this after a call opens frequently miss it.

The right English test, from the right centre. Fulbright Egypt accepts only TOEFL ITP at 550, TOEFL iBT at 80, IELTS at 6.5, Duolingo at 105, or an Egyptian-university English Proficiency Test at 550 taken at one of a short list of named centres, AMIDEAST among them. This is a per-funder requirement rather than a general standard: a valid certificate from an unlisted centre, or a different test entirely, will not be accepted. Check what your specific funder names before booking.

Beyond those three, expect the standard set — passport, degree certificates and transcripts, and for embassy tracks a medical form on the embassy's own template. Because Egyptian documents are usually issued in Arabic, budget for certified translation into the destination's language for anything going to Japan, Korea, Germany or China.
