About the Program

The MA in Modern China Studies is a two-year, English-language research programme with a strong emphasis on modern Chinese history, society, and culture from the twentieth century to the present. Coursework develops research skills and methods, improves language skills through source readings and translation classes, and includes an integrated semester abroad. Students have the opportunity to work on one of the institute's ongoing research projects in modern Chinese history or to complete an internship. Students work with an international group of scholars and draw on a research infrastructure that includes local collections such as the offline collection of the Maoist Legacy project and the CrossAsia system, which provides access to Chinese online databases relevant to research in the field. The programme runs over four semesters and is offered at the Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Freiburg, in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
