The combined Accelerator Science Program, Materials Structure Science Program, and Particle and Nuclear Physics Program, offered as a five-year doctoral track at The Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI, is conducted in English, with admission each October, based at the university's Ibaraki location. SOKENDAI was established in 1988 to train first-class researchers through doctoral course programs built around the research environment of Japan's Inter-University Research Institutes. These linked programs cover the physics of particle accelerators, the structure and properties of materials studied using large-scale scientific facilities, and fundamental research in particle and nuclear physics. Ibaraki hosts major Japanese research facilities in these fields, giving doctoral candidates access to accelerator infrastructure and instrumentation not widely available elsewhere. The five-year format takes students from foundational coursework in physics and experimental methods through to independent dissertation research using accelerator-based experiments or theoretical analysis. Being based in Ibaraki places doctoral students close to some of Japan's key physics research infrastructure, supporting close collaboration with facility staff and visiting researchers. With a single annual intake each October, applicants plan around one entry point per year for the five-year doctoral track.
