What architecture programmes actually cost

UCL lists an international tuition fee of £36,800 a year for its Architecture BSc in 2027/28, and Cardiff University lists £30,700 a year for 2026 entry — both near the top of the range Global Admissions sources for this subject. France sits at the opposite end: the cheapest sourced programmes, run through the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture system, start around $192 a year.

Portfolio and studio material costs are rarely reflected in the headline tuition figure in this field — ask what's included before you budget.

Getting in — grades plus a portfolio

UCL's Architecture BSc asks for AAB at A level plus a comprehensive portfolio of creative work, submitted upon invitation at application stage, with GCSE English and Maths required at grade C/4. Cardiff University's Architecture BSc publishes a typical A-level range of AAA to AAB, and asks applicants to send a small digital portfolio — flagged as especially important if you haven't studied art or design, or don't have a creative background.

That last point matters: a portfolio requirement doesn't automatically mean you need a design-school background. Check what each school is actually asking to see before assuming you're not eligible.

A design degree and an architecture licence are two different things

Most architecture-abroad content stops at portfolio tips and destination lists — useful for getting in, but it skips how school choice feeds into eventual licensure, which is the bigger decision for anyone planning a career, not just a design education. Search demand clusters heavily around portfolios, but rarely connects them to accreditation, professional experience, and exam requirements downstream.

In the UK, ARB requires applicants to meet its Competency Outcomes (Academic and Practice Outcomes together) through either an accredited master's-level qualification plus an accredited practice qualification, or one combined accredited qualification covering both. In the US, NAAB is the sole agency recognised by all 55 jurisdictions' registration boards to accredit professional architecture degrees, and NCARB requires the Architectural Experience Program plus the Architect Registration Examination everywhere. Check your target school's accreditation status against the body relevant to where you actually want to practise.

Before you build your architecture portfolio
