What you're actually paying for

The UK's share of Global Admissions' film inventory is unusually large — 205 of the 333 listed programmes, more than the other 11 countries combined. That doesn't automatically make it the cheapest or the most accessible option; it means there's simply more choice to compare within one country, from broad film studies degrees to narrow production specialisations.

Costs vary widely by school and level. AFI Conservatory, a US graduate-only conservatory, publishes 2027-28 tuition of $78,151 and an estimated total cost of attendance (tuition, living expenses, supplies, insurance) of $111,038 — a genuine outlier at the high end, not a typical figure. Most listed film programmes, especially bachelor's-level ones in France, Germany, and elsewhere in Europe, cost a fraction of that. How admission actually works

Most film programmes admit on portfolio and creative sample rather than a fixed exam or grade cutoff, but exactly what counts as a portfolio changes by discipline. AFI Conservatory's cinematography applicants, for example, submit a moving-image sample, a 10-shot 60-second narrative assignment, a photography portfolio of 8 to 12 images, and a separate cinematography reel — a materially different task from what a directing or screenwriting applicant submits to the same school.

Ohio University's School of Film takes a similar approach at undergraduate level: applicants submit a creative sample (1-2 minutes of moving-image work, or a combination of screenplay, prose, or still images), a personal statement, and a resume — and Ohio notes that the same portfolio doubles as the application for its talent-based scholarships, so a stronger submission can pay off twice.

"Film school" hides very different application tasks

A single programme title covers directing, cinematography, editing, producing, and screenwriting — disciplines that ask for genuinely different evidence, not variations on the same reel. AFI Conservatory's own admissions pages spell this out discipline by discipline: what a cinematography applicant submits looks nothing like what a screenwriting applicant does, even within the same school and the same intake.

Before you start building a portfolio, confirm which specific discipline you're applying to and read that discipline's requirements directly — not the school's general admissions overview. A strong reel built for the wrong discipline's expectations is a common way applicants lose ground they didn't need to.
