What dentistry programmes actually cost

The University of Portsmouth lists EU and international tuition for its Dental Surgery BDS at £43,000 a year, subject to annual increase — near the top end of what Global Admissions sources in this field. Germany sits at the opposite end: the University of Bonn's sourced programme starts under $700 a year, though language of instruction and local competition for seats vary sharply by country.

If you're applying on a UK Student visa, budget separately for the maintenance requirement: £1,529 a month in London, £1,171 a month outside London, for up to nine months.

Getting in

King's College London's Dentistry BDS asks for A*AA, with grade A in Biology or Chemistry and a second grade A from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Psychology — or 38 points in the IB including grade 6 in Higher Level Chemistry or Biology. Cardiff University's Dental Surgery BDS publishes AAA at A level with Biology and Chemistry, or 36 points overall in the IB with 666 at Higher Level including Biology and Chemistry.

English-language thresholds sit high across both: King's requires IELTS-equivalent evidence at its standard undergraduate band, and Cardiff asks for IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 7.0 in speaking and 6.5 in every other subskill.

Recognition is the whole decision — check it before the school's name

Publicly visible dentistry-abroad content spends far more time on destination lists than on what recognition actually requires — and it regularly blurs together shadowing, internships and full qualifying degrees, which are completely different commitments. For dentistry, that gap matters more than almost anywhere else, because admission, clinical training and eventual licensing are three separate decisions with three separate sets of rules.

In the UK, the GDC's Overseas Registration Examination is specifically for dentists whose qualifications aren't on its recognised list; it has two parts — a computer-based clinical-knowledge test, then an in-person practical assessment over several days. In the US, JCNDE requires graduates of non-CODA-accredited schools to complete a Certification of Eligibility form before sitting the INBDE. Check the equivalent process for your target country before you pick a school on reputation alone.
