The famous names

These names come up constantly in cyber-security-abroad discussions — here's what each one is actually known for, so you can weigh the reputation against your own track (technical, mathematical, or leadership) and budget.

There's no universal licence for this — so check the certification instead

Unlike medicine, nursing, or law, cyber security has no profession-wide licensing chain you need to pass through to practise. What exists in some countries is voluntary, course-level certification instead. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre runs exactly this kind of scheme: NCSC says its certification helps prospective students make better-informed choices, and states unambiguously that if a degree doesn't appear on its published list, it does not have NCSC certification.

That distinction matters when you're comparing programmes. A degree without NCSC certification isn't necessarily a bad one. Plenty of strong programmes outside the UK simply aren't eligible for a UK-specific scheme, but where certification exists, it's a genuinely independent signal worth checking, rather than relying on a school's own marketing about quality.

One degree title, several different entry routes

"Cyber security master's" can mean genuinely different admission bars depending on the track. The University of Queensland's Master of Cyber Security illustrates this well: its 2-year Leadership field of study accepts a bachelor's degree in any discipline (with a GPA of 5.0 on a 7-point scale) but also requires two years of supervisory or management experience. Its 1.5-year Cyber Defence field instead requires successful completion of at least three specific prior subjects — things like Applied Cryptography, Computer Networking, Databases, Web Application Programming, Operating Systems, or Introduction to Programming.

A third route, Cryptography, requires a different set of prior subjects entirely: at least three from a mathematical list including Number Theory, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Calculus, or Mathematical Logic. All three routes sit under one programme name. Before you assume you don't qualify, or that you're automatically eligible, check which specific track's entry criteria actually apply.

What you're actually paying for

The UK and US together carry most of Global Admissions' cyber-security inventory — 314 of the 503 listed programmes. Costs vary widely: the University of Queensland, for example, publishes an indicative 2027 annual international tuition fee of AUD 60,952 for its Master of Cyber Security, but states clearly that this is an approximate full-time figure, that fees vary according to study load and the specific courses selected, and that fees are reviewed each year and may increase.

That kind of caveat is common across this field, not specific to one university — ask every school for its actual per-course or per-credit basis rather than treating a single published headline figure as fixed for your whole programme.
