Acute Medicine

Registered nurses who are already working in Acute Medicine Units, Emergency Departments or General Medical Departments and hold NMBI registration are the intended participants. The programme aims to develop knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of acutely ill adults, preparing nurses to handle urgent and emergency presentations within the acute medicine environment. Applicants must have approval from their line manager and a clinical practice supervisor.

The Certificate lasts 12 weeks (one semester) and is delivered in a blended format. Students attend the ATU Mayo campus one day per fortnight for skills development, while the remaining work is completed online. The teaching approach combines theoretical online modules with practical sessions focused on clinical skills, ensuring graduates can apply evidence-based practice immediately. Assessment is entirely continuous.

It is the only Level 8 Special Purpose Award in Acute Medicine Nursing approved by the ONMSD.
