SUNGKYUNKWAN UNIVERSITY (SKKU)

PhD in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering

Jongno-gu, South Korea Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Sungkyunkwan University's doctoral program in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering, based in Jongno-gu, South Korea, trains researchers to study the structure, properties, and performance of materials used in modern technology. Doctoral coursework covers the physics and chemistry of materials, characterization techniques, and processing methods, providing the background needed to investigate metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, and composite materials at an advanced research level. Dissertation projects in the program frequently address topics such as energy storage materials, semiconductor and electronic materials, biomaterials, nanostructured materials, and materials for sustainable manufacturing. Because instruction is delivered in English, the program attracts doctoral candidates from a wide range of materials science, chemistry, and engineering backgrounds who want to pursue research at the forefront of materials development. After graduation, students typically move into research and development positions in the semiconductor, battery, electronics, and advanced manufacturing industries, or take up roles at national research institutes and universities. South Korea's strong presence in semiconductor manufacturing and battery technology gives doctoral candidates access to industry partners and applied research collaborations relevant to their dissertations. The program runs for four years, and new students are admitted in both March and September of every year, giving applicants two entry points annually. Throughout the doctorate, students combine coursework, laboratory experimentation, and independent dissertation research to develop the technical depth needed to characterize and design new materials, presenting and publishing their findings in English over the course of their studies.
