    About the Program

The University of Tokyo, Japan's oldest national university, was founded in 1877 with a stated mission of fostering globally minded graduates who can take on leading roles at home and abroad. The university operates 10 faculties and 15 graduate schools and enrolls students from a wide range of countries and backgrounds. Its Aeronautics and Astronautics Course at the doctoral level runs 3 years, taught entirely in English, with entry in October. Doctoral study in aeronautics and astronautics generally centers on an original research project carried out under faculty supervision, covering areas such as aerodynamics, propulsion, flight dynamics and control, spacecraft systems, and structural design for aircraft and space vehicles, culminating in a dissertation. Coursework and seminars alongside the research track help candidates build the technical writing, experimental and analytical, and presentation skills expected of aerospace researchers. Aeronautics and astronautics draws on physics, mathematics, and mechanical engineering to design vehicles and systems that operate in the air and in space, spanning applications from commercial and military aircraft to satellites and space exploration. For international candidates, doctoral study at a Japanese national university offers exposure to aerospace research connected to Japan's aviation and space programs, along with the chance to work alongside peers from a wide range of academic and national backgrounds. Because instruction is delivered in English, students are not required to already speak Japanese to participate in coursework and research discussions, though many use the 3 years of study to build some working knowledge of the language. Graduates of doctoral programs in aeronautics and astronautics commonly pursue careers with aerospace manufacturers, space agencies, research institutions, or academia, applying the specialized research skills developed during their dissertation to aircraft, spacecraft, or propulsion problems.
