Southern Illinois University Carbondale connects teaching with research across a broad range of academic options. Students can choose from more than 200 majors, minors and specializations, with graduate programs, online study and off-campus programs also available. Simmons Law School and the School of Medicine extend the university’s academic offerings. Research examples include a sustainable approach to extracting rare earth elements with algae and the identification of three new poison dart frog species from Peru and Brazil. External grants support research and service activity. The Carbondale campus includes more than 3,000 acres of hills and forest used for outdoor education and adventure. Outdoor-focused study and training can include wilderness first response, Leave No Trace instruction and high ropes course instruction. The university promotes small class sizes through an 11:1 student-faculty ratio. Students can also take part in athletics, spirit activities and Saluki traditions, including the Flying Salukis aviation program. International students are identified among the university’s main student groups and can consider undergraduate, graduate, medical, law or online study. Transfer applicants should review program-specific conditions because some programs require additional screening or higher entry standards. Applicants with at least 12 transferable semester hours generally need a 2.0 GPA, while those with fewer credits must also meet first-year admission requirements. Transfer credit is evaluated for core and program requirements.
