Master in Agrobiotechnology

Gießen, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Agrobiotechnology at Justus Liebig University Giessen is an international Master's programme responding to the growing importance of biotechnology in plant and animal production and in nutritional sciences. Advances in genomic research, cell biology, and related fields have opened new opportunities for applying scientific knowledge to the challenges of food production, and this programme prepares scientists to engage with those opportunities in both conventional disciplines and in the fields of agriculture and nutrition. Running over 4 semesters, the programme is built around eight mandatory core modules and six optional profile modules, supplemented by a work placement and concluded with the Master's thesis. Core modules cover Applied Statistics, Plant Protection and Bioengineering, Molecular Phytopathology, Biochemistry, Biochemistry Lab Course, Biotechnology and Genomics, Microbial Food Biotechnology, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, and Principles of Scientific Practice. Profile modules span a wide subject range — including Plant Breeding, Phytopathology, Insect Biotechnology, Microbiology, Bioprocess Engineering, and further areas — allowing students to shape an individual competence profile. A key educational aim is to provide practical methods and expertise grounded in a broad scientific foundation, through research-oriented study that addresses current farming practice. Students develop skills in identifying and assessing the impact of technological processes alongside scientific and creative capacities. A voluntary work placement can be completed in the chemical industry, agricultural corporations, the food industry, government agencies, or NGOs. The programme is taught in English at Justus Liebig University Giessen in Gießen.
