Archaeological Excavation and Post-excavation

Graduates may work as guides or volunteers in local museums, heritage centres and Office of Public Works sites, or as general operatives on research and commercial excavations. The certificate also supports roles in cultural heritage tourism, such as tour guides, heritage interpreters or staff in heritage-focused tourism businesses.

Each week students attend two-hour online classes from early March to mid-May, learning the history of the Green Fort, Irish archaeology and excavation techniques. In June they spend three weeks on-site in Sligo, excavating a trench, recording features and surveying the fort, then return to the ATU laboratory for post-excavation work including artefact washing, cataloguing, illustration and photogrammetric modelling. Field trips and evening sessions provide wider archaeological and cultural context.

The course is open to anyone with an interest in archaeology, including those without previous experience, tourism professionals and lifelong learners. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for fieldwork.
