About Archaeological Field Studies International

The application deadline is 22nd February 2026.

If you have an interest in archaeology or work in tourism, heritage or cultural sectors and are looking to gain practical field experience, this certificate offers a focused pathway. No previous archaeological background is required, though you should be able to walk on uneven ground for at least 500 m and cope with outdoor work in varied weather.

The course combines two-hour online lectures each week from early March with a five-week residential block in May-June at the Green Fort, Sligo. During the block you will take part in a structured excavation, record and survey the site, and later process artefacts and samples in the ATU laboratory. A ten-day study tour of north-west Irish monuments follows, giving contextual insight into the wider archaeological landscape.

  • Three modules, each worth 6 credits: Archaeological Excavation and Post-Excavation International 1, International 2, and Archaeology of Ireland Study Tour.
  • Blended delivery: online lectures plus a five-week on-site block at the Green Fort, Sligo.
  • Access to ATU’s Archaeology Laboratory and local community field-walking volunteers.
