SUNGKYUNKWAN UNIVERSITY (SKKU)

PhD in Architecture

Jongno-gu, South Korea Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Sungkyunkwan University's doctoral program in Architecture, based in Jongno-gu, South Korea, prepares researchers to study the design, construction, and performance of buildings and the urban environments that surround them. Doctoral coursework and dissertation work address architectural design theory, building technology, urban and spatial planning, sustainable design, and the history and criticism of architecture, giving candidates a broad foundation before they specialize in a chosen research area. Typical dissertation topics include energy-efficient building systems, adaptive reuse of existing structures, digital design and fabrication methods, housing policy, and the relationship between architecture and urban life. Instruction is conducted in English, which allows the program to bring together doctoral candidates from different architectural traditions and design cultures who want to pursue research-level study rather than professional practice alone. Graduates of the program typically move into academic positions teaching architecture and design, research roles at architecture and planning institutes, or advanced technical positions within architecture firms and government agencies responsible for urban development. Some go on to shape building codes, sustainability standards, or public housing policy. Seoul's dense urban fabric and ongoing redevelopment projects give doctoral students a working laboratory for studying contemporary architectural and urban issues firsthand. The doctorate takes four years to complete, and Sungkyunkwan University opens admissions twice yearly, in March and September, so applicants have two possible entry points each year. Throughout the program, students build the research skills, design knowledge, and academic writing ability, developed in English, needed to contribute original scholarship to the field of architecture and to teach or lead research at the doctoral level after graduation.
