📚 About the Program

This program is exclusive to the network of Quebec universities. The goal of the bachelor's program in midwifery at UQTR is to train independent midwives, offering women and their families safe and professional primary care throughout the perinatal period. The midwives trained at UQTR work in an interdisciplinary context, respecting the need of women to give birth in safety and with dignity in the place of their choice, whether it is their home, a birthing center or a hospital centre. The program is based on the objectives pursued by the Quebec government in the legalization of the practice of midwives in Quebec, on the philosophy of Quebec midwives and on the international definition of midwifery. It responds to ministerial orientations concerning the practice of midwives. It is based more particularly on the following perspectives: the humanization of perinatal care; the continuity; the responsibility of women and their right to informed choice; community support; safety of mother and child; professional autonomy and interprofessional collaboration; the contribution to the achievement of the objectives of the Québec Perinatal Policy. NB The word “midwife” designates a professional title, which is accessible to both men and women. The feminine is used in this document without discrimination and only to lighten the text. Program Objectives The objective of the program is to equip students with all the skills required to provide care, support and relevant advice to women and their families during the various phases of the perinatal period including pregnancy, labor, childbirth and newborn care. It leads students to have confidence in the maternity process, to respect the variety of women's needs and to consider in perinatal follow-up the psychological, social, cultural and spiritual as well as physical aspects of the person, to encourage the exercise of parenting skills and fostering informed choice. The program also ensures the development of generic skills that allow the student to apply her capacities for analysis, synthesis and critical discernment within practice, to demonstrate a social and ethical commitment through all aspects of the midwifery profession, to communicate effectively with women and their families, to collaborate with other stakeholders and professionals in the network, to contribute to the development of theoretical and clinical knowledge through research and to learn from autonomously with a concern for continuous updating. NB For more detailed information on the program and on the midwifery profession, see the Baccalaureate in midwifery practice website at the following address: www.uqtr..
