The Bachelor of Architecture at American University of Sharjah, offered in English in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, prepares students to design buildings and the spaces around them. Architecture as a discipline combines creative design with technical knowledge of structures, materials, building systems, and construction methods, requiring architects to balance aesthetic, functional, and practical considerations. A program of this kind typically includes design studio courses, where students work on building projects of increasing complexity, alongside coursework in structures, building materials, environmental systems, architectural history and theory, and computer-aided design and drafting tools. Studio-based learning is central to architectural education, with students presenting and defending design decisions in reviews that resemble professional practice. Because architecture affects how people live, work, and move through the built environment, students are also introduced to considerations such as sustainability, climate-responsive design, and the social and cultural context of buildings. Graduates of architecture programs typically pursue careers as architects, architectural designers, or roles within construction and urban planning firms, with professional licensure in many countries requiring further examination or practical experience after graduation. The United Arab Emirates has undergone extensive urban development, and its construction and real estate sectors provide a relevant context for studying architecture, from residential and commercial buildings to larger urban projects. Based in Sharjah and taught in English, the program connects students to architectural conventions and design software used internationally while situating their studies within a regional built environment shaped by rapid growth and a mix of traditional and contemporary building practices.
