The BSc (Hons) in Applied Mathematics Programme is set to be offered from 2020 by the Division of Science and Technology (DST). With a global focus on preparing students to enter STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields, Applied Mathematics plays an important role in preparing the future workforce.

Mathematical sciences are an increasingly integral and essential component of various areas including biology, medicine, social sciences, business, advanced design, climate, finance, advanced materials, and more. The programme will fully utilise the university's advantages of internationalisation, and focus on the development of student's knowledge, ability and personality.

The principal aim of the Programme is to provide students with an education that prepares them for careers as applied mathematicians in various industries or universities. It will offer broad training in core applied mathematics and give students a good foundation for future careers. The Programme also aims to offer opportunities to students wishing to pursue a postgraduate education or develop their applied mathematical skills in an area of particular relevance to the modern industrial context.

Specifically, the Programme is designed to

• Give students a solid foundation in fundamental mathematics upon which to build their understanding of mathematical applications;

• Provide a broad-based and yet deep education in applied mathematics, so as to enable them in applying their knowledge and skills to various related professions;

• Well train students in computational thinking and the use of various computer software because computers are indispensable tools for solving mathematical problems; and

• Teach students how to formulate appropriate mathematical models for solving real-life problems.

Situated in Zhuhai, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC) is the first full-scale cooperation in higher education between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong. UIC shoulders the historical mission of advancing the internationalization of Chinese higher education and taking the lead in implementing liberal arts education in China.

International Higher Education

With English as the medium of instruction, UIC's education is of international standards with high-caliber academic performance. The college has established the Divisions of Business and Management, Culture and Creativity, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, in addition to the Graduate School. Altogether UIC offers 28 undergraduate programmes, and is approved to offer nine research and five taught postgraduate programmes for over 7,000 students. Undergraduates receive HKBU Bachelor's Degrees and UIC Graduation Certificates, and postgraduates earn HKBU degrees.
