Bachelors Programme Objects Conservation

Tuition fees are 126,000 SEK per year. The deadline to apply for the Jul 2027 intake is Apr 15, 2027.

Situated in the historic surroundings of Visby, this programme immerses students in the delicate intersection of art, history, and natural science. Conservation is a practice defined by the tension between preserving material authenticity and understanding the degradation processes inherent to cultural heritage objects. Students engage in the physical examination and long-term care of artifacts, requiring an analytical mindset that balances chemical knowledge with manual craftsmanship.

This is a highly specialized, hands-on path for those dedicated to safeguarding our material past. The training emphasizes the ethical and technical complexities involved in stabilizing everything from archaeological finds to modern artifacts. Because the curriculum is delivered entirely in Swedish, candidates must possess a high level of proficiency in the language to navigate the nuanced technical terminology and theoretical discourse required in the conservation profession.

The programme benefits from its location in a UNESCO World Heritage site, providing a living laboratory for students. The environment fosters a focused, collaborative atmosphere where the practical work of restoration is informed by the rich historical context of Gotland. It is an ideal setting for those who view objects not just as static items, but as narratives that require active, expert maintenance to survive for future generations.
