The Architectural Engineering BEng (Hons) at Heriot-Watt University is accredited by two important industry bodies, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Energy Institute (EI), aligning with the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society. This programme provides students with the knowledge and skills needed by industry to design buildings that not only provide sustainable and low energy environments that have a positive influence on the health and wellbeing of the people who use them, but buildings that are also resilient and adaptable to future climate change.

Students in the latter years of the degree focus on practical interdisciplinary design and management skills, with an emphasis on personal development as an Architectural Engineer within the professional environment. The programme ensures students have the skills required for the specification, design, and management of engineering services in buildings, with a focus on energy-efficient and sustainable solutions.

Global perspectives

The curriculum provides opportunities to specialise in several areas, including Hydraulics and Hydrology, Surveying, Cost Modelling and Measurement, and Innovation in Construction Practice. Additionally, the programme offers access to specialist equipment, computing software, and labs, including a building services lab and acoustic labs. Applied learning opportunities, such as a week-long field course, allow students to gain practical experience working alongside professional engineers and tradesmen.
