How can we reconcile the growing demands of human health, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stability through the lens of precision engineering? The Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering at the University of Idaho addresses this intersection by applying rigorous design and analytical principles to the complex mechanisms of life itself. This interdisciplinary programme frames its focus around the four essences of existence: exuberance, environment, edibles, and energy.

Students engage with a curriculum that bridges the gap between fundamental biological sciences and applied engineering technology. Whether you are interested in developing drug delivery systems, optimizing bio-based industrial processes, or building AI-driven diagnostic tools, this degree provides the technical foundation to innovate at the cellular and systems levels. It is particularly well-suited for those who envision careers in biotechnology, environmental remediation, or clinical healthcare, including students pursuing a pre-med track who wish to distinguish themselves with an engineering perspective.

Distinguishing Features

• Hands-on Research Culture: Students participate in a nationally recognized Senior Capstone Design Program, culminating in the annual Engineering Design EXPO, which showcases prototypes and engineered solutions.
• Professional Development: Home to Idaho’s only Grand Challenge Scholars Program, the department emphasizes leadership, project management, and professional skills alongside technical proficiency.
• Career-Ready Pathways: The programme offers robust support for internships and cooperative education (co-op) opportunities, allowing students to alternate academic study with paid, full-time professional experience.
• STEM-Recognized: As a STEM-designated degree, international graduates may be eligible for the 24-month OPT extension, providing a significant advantage in the competitive US job market.

In Moscow, students study on an ivy-covered campus within a supportive and welcoming community. Campus life includes clubs, sports, housing, dining, lectures, performances and showcases. The university also offers online classes through Campus 360 and in-person study locations in Boise, Coeur d’Alene and Idaho Falls, giving students options beyond the Moscow campus.

The University of Idaho is Idaho’s first and only Carnegie R1 research university. Its academic offerings cover more than 200 areas of study, including agriculture, anatomy, fine arts and business administration. Learning is connected to hands-on experience, internships and career pathways, with research activity that includes using artificial intelligence to track wildfire spread and work related to nuclear energy law.

International students are among the applicant groups served through the university’s admissions process, alongside first-year, transfer and graduate students. Financial support includes scholarships, financial aid and low tuition, while housing and dining options are available on campus. Students can build connections with fellow Vandals through campus activities, explore opportunities across Idaho and take part in the university’s statewide footprint.
