Students spend each week analysing real genomic datasets through an online platform, completing hands-on projects in Galaxy, writing Python or R scripts, and interpreting results from sequencing, metagenomics and transcriptomics. Weekly activities also include virtual seminars, discussion forums and, for certain modules, short in-person labs at the Donegal-Letterkenny campus where practical coding and R sessions are run.

The programme runs for one year, divided into three semesters. Semester 1 delivers foundational modules on genome biology and modern sequencing technologies. Semester 2 focuses on bioinformatics methods, programming fundamentals and data analysis with R. Semester 3 advances to command-line bioinformatics and a research dissertation that integrates all skills.
