About the Program

Graduates of the Biomedical Engineering Combined PhD MD programme go on to careers in academic medicine, health care delivery, industry, and government, as well as further study in postdoctoral research.

This unique programme, jointly offered by the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, allows students to earn both a PhD and an MD within seven years. Students can choose from a range of research areas in biomedical engineering, including imaging and image processing, biomechanics, and computational biology, and benefit from collaborations with the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and the McDonnell Genome Institute.

The curriculum combines coursework, laboratory rotations, and clinical training, providing students with a strong foundation in both engineering principles and clinical medicine. Students complete at least 18 credits of research and present their findings in a thesis. The program culminates in a 24-month clinical training period at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which is the primary teaching hospital for the School of Medicine.
