Mathematical physics is a field at the intersection of physics, mathematics and the real world, covering the fundamental structures of the universe and the basis for technological advancements. Heriot Watt University offers a 3 to 4 years BSc (Hons) programme in Mathematical Physics, which integrates mathematics with the precise mathematical language of 21st-century mathematical physics. This programme, taught in Edinburgh, is supported by the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, a joint research institute that brings together research activities from three departments at Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh.

The Maths Café provides peer support in the form of help with difficult tutorial questions, exam revision, advice on managing workload, and forming study groups. The Maxwell Institute also offers international workshops and conferences and attracts leading mathematical scientists from across the globe.
