About Buildings Archaeology

Historic building archaeology examines how surviving structures reveal the social, cultural and technical decisions of their builders. In Ireland this course explores evidence of medieval and post-medieval settlement forms, material construction, architectural styles and the processes of decay that affect stone monuments and ruined buildings. The programme runs over one academic year and consists of three 13-week modules. Two modules begin in September and a final module starts in January. Each module carries five credits and is delivered fully online, with live weekly lectures and supporting material on Moodle. Each week students attend a live online lecture, then devote five to six hours to independent study, reading and preparing assignment tasks such as building reports, essays and Moodle tests. Assessment is through two pieces of coursework per module, without formal examinations.
