Bachelor in Ceramics Skills and Design

The module “Pottery Production Techniques I” delivers 15 credits of intensive wheel-thrown practice, where learners develop speed, accuracy and the ability to produce industry-standard shapes. Alongside tool-making and production planning, students work in teams, applying health-and-safety standards and documenting each stage of the process. Learners also apply mechanical principles of pottery design, organise production stages and maintain a clean workshop, preparing them for effective work in a commercial studio.

Across the three-year programme students explore clay and glaze chemistry, kiln operation, surface decoration, design history and technical drawing, including CAD. Modules such as “Surface Treatments I” and “Design and Drawing Process” build creative and visual communication skills, while studio management training ensures safe, efficient practice in a professional ceramics environment. The “Design History and Theory” module examines movements from Arts & Crafts to Bauhaus, encouraging students to critique the impact of design on society and to forecast future trends.
