PhD in Chemical Engineering Program

Hiroshima, Japan Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Chemical Engineering Program is a doctoral course offered by Hiroshima University, taught in English across a three-year period with intakes in April and October. Hiroshima University is one of the largest and most comprehensive universities in Japan, organized around twelve schools and four graduate schools alongside a university hospital and affiliated research institutes, and it has been recognized for its global education initiatives. Within that structure, the Chemical Engineering Program trains doctoral candidates to carry out independent research on chemical processes, reaction engineering, and industrial-scale production methods. Typical areas of study in a chemical engineering doctorate include process design, transport phenomena, reaction kinetics, separation technology, and process control, together with a supervised dissertation project developed under a faculty advisor. Graduates of chemical engineering doctoral programs often move into research and development roles at manufacturing, energy, or materials companies, or continue into academic and government research positions, applying their expertise to challenges in areas such as sustainable process design and resource efficiency. Because instruction is delivered in English, the program is built to welcome international doctoral applicants who already hold relevant training in chemical engineering or a closely related field. Offering two intake periods each year gives applicants flexibility in timing their start date around the completion of a prior degree or other commitments. As with most doctoral chemical engineering tracks, the program combines advanced coursework, laboratory and computational research, and academic writing, with the dissertation forming the core deliverable of the three years of study. Students are expected to work closely with faculty mentors throughout the research process, from problem formulation through experimental or simulation work to the defense of original findings in the field of chemical engineering.
